Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized therapeutic technique that involves gentle, rhythmic movements to stimulate the lymphatic system, promoting the flow of lymph fluid and helping to reduce swelling and improve overall immune function. It is sometimes referred to as Lymphatic massage.
Not in most cases, however, a referral from your healthcare provider is always helpful for us to ensure we are working within the scope of your provider's expectations. Unlike traditional massage, which targets muscles and deeper tissues, MLD focuses on the skin and superficial lymphatic vessels. It involves light, repetitive strokes and is primarily aimed at enhancing lymphatic circulation rather than relieving muscle tension.
No, MLD is a gentle and relaxing treatment. The light pressure and rhythmic movements used during the session are designed to be soothing and should not cause any discomfort.
To prepare for your MLD session, stay well-hydrated, avoid heavy meals before the treatment, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. It's also helpful to avoid applying lotions or oils on your skin before the session. Fill out your medical intake form online and please use the restroom before coming in for your appointment. The restrooms are in the hallway just outside spa. If you have a compression garment, please wear it to your appointment and we can help you in and out of it as necessary.
During an MLD session, you will lie comfortably while the therapist performs gentle, rhythmic strokes on your skin. The session typically lasts between 45 to 60 minutes, and you should feel relaxed throughout the process.
MLD is generally safe for most people. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions, such as acute infections, untreated cancer, congestive heart failure, or blood clots. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting MLD if you have any medical concerns.
The frequency of MLD treatments depends on your individual needs and the condition being treated. Your therapist will recommend a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation, which may range from a few sessions to ongoing maintenance treatments. We can also consult with your provider to ensure we meet their expectations. The MLD Institute International recommends:
After an MLD session, most people feel relaxed and may notice a reduction in swelling or a feeling of lightness. It's important to stay hydrated and follow any post-session care instructions provided by your therapist to maximize the benefits of the treatment.
If you are post op and have a compression garment, please wear it to your MLD appointment. We can help you in and out of it as needed. If you are not able to remove your garment due to your provider's orders, we can work through it in most cases.
